Obituary of Kerry Hedlund

Kerry Balcerek Hedlund of Simpsonville, SC, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, PA, passed away Aug. 24 after battling cancer for a year. She was 66.

She is survived by her mother, Henrietta Balcerek of Mt. Pleasant; her husband, Paul Hedlund of Simpsonville; two children, Joshua Slater of Miami and Megan Smith of Sarasota, FL; three step-children, Todd Hedlund of Belton, SC, Natalie Kaufman of Anderson, SC, and Travis Hedlund of Pelzer, SC, as well as many loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

She is also survived by four siblings: Tom Balcerek (Marcy) of Forest Hills, PA, Diane Lingenfield (Jim) of Norvelt, PA, Scott Balcerek (Marissa) of Oakland, CA, and Chris Balcerek (Juri) of Burke, VA.

She was preceded in death by her father, Vincent Balcerek.

Kerry was a 1974 graduate of Mount Pleasant Area Senior High School, where she was involved in many clubs and activities, including class officer, color guard and homecoming court.

Upon graduation she worked at West Penn Power in Greensburg, PA, before moving to Lexington, KY, and then to South Carolina where she worked for M.B. Kahn Construction Co. from 2000 until her death.

Kerry's joyful, helpful and faithful demeanor was a comfort to many, including those she taught at Pelham Road Elementary School in Greenville, SC, as a reading assistant, and as a counselor at Brookwood Church in Simpsonville, SC, where she was a valued and active member of the congregation for more than a decade.

There was a celebration of life service for Kerry at Brookwood Church on Sept. 1. The family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to either Brookwood Church or The Haven of Rest ministry in Anderson, SC.
